Pinelands Top 15

After much anticipation and discussion, finally an update has been done. 1 Beavin “Beamer” Rawlins               Honorary position held 2 Richard “Fritz “ Thomson              Up 3 3 Jon the Pom                                        New Entry 4 Andre “Kakbat “Coetzer                Down 1 5 Gavin Roos                                          Up 4 6 Darryl “The Wolf “ Wolversen     Up 9 7 Kirsten Marshall                               Down 3 8 Duncan Emslie                                   Up 10 9 Hayden Sakkie De Kock                 Down 2 10 Barney De Klerk                             Down 9 11 Travis Muller                                   New entry 12 Steve “Chairman” Westraad       Down 4 13 Lups Tuswa4life                              Up 1 14 Ash “Admin” Larter                       Down 2 15 Jacky “Ocean” Maurer                  New Entry Number 1 spot has been held on an honorary basis for the duration of the upcoming season. After much debate Fritzel has moved into 2nd position. Many saying that he doesn’t deserve to be on this list, he needs to be on a list all on his own. A record new entry at 3 is Jon The Pom Orman. A few memorable moments, most notably waking up in a strangers house in Gardens among many others. Big jumpers in the right direction are Duncan Emslie (Up 10) and Darryl Wolverson (Up 9). No explanation needed. Barney De Klerk hangs on to the Top 10 but has been rather subdued. Will need to up his game if he wants to stay up there. A most notable appearance is made by Jacky Wolverson. The potpourri and flowers in the toilets are a good touch. We’ll leave it at that. The top 15 has seen Mark Temple, Alan Badenhorst, Chukkie Christiaans and Plank Canning drop out. This being said, the door doesn’t...

The next step in the evolution of the mystery spinner

What’s the most compelling sight in cricket? A helmet-less Viv Richards en route to the wicket, swinging his bat around his head? Jeff Thomson at the start of his run-up, preparing to unleash hell? Geoffrey Boycott’s eyes widening as someone points out that his last comment wasn’t entirely accurate? And what about the moment when the mystery spinner makes his entrance? Watching batsmen face Ajantha Mendis for the first time was extraordinary. Professional willow operatives, men who’d released autobiographies; men who’d put their names to serious features in serious cricket magazines telling youngsters how to choose the right pair of batting gloves and how not to play the leg glance, were made to look like random Frenchmen who’d been handed bats and sent out to the middle without any explanation. Perhaps that’s how it was when the first devious rotter began flinging it roundarm instead of underarm. Suddenly the world was a shadowy, scary place, full of unfriendly bounces and malicious angles. But the nightmare didn’t last. Once you realise that the rabbit has been under the table the whole time, no one is impressed by that thing the magician does with his top hat. Mystery spinners are like Paris fashions, a dead salmon or a politician’s apologies; you have to enjoy them while they’re fresh. Unless you count Adil Rashid, who is technically more of a missing spinner than a mystery spinner, Sri Lanka currently hold 66% of the world’s mystery spin bowling resources. The latest graduate from the Lankan Academy of the Unorthodox is Akila Dananjaya, a wristy teenage stick insect with more varieties of offspin to...

Pietersen signs for Pakistan

All things considered it’s surprising it took so long In a shocking development, Kevin Pietersen has signed for Pakistan. Pietersen’s move from Surrey to Sialkot is the third eye-catching transfer of the summer, after Robin van Persie became a Manchester United player and Kristen Stewart became single. At a hastily convened press conference in Lahore, Pietersen was quick to emphasise that his move was not motivated by money. “It’s a freedom thing,” said the 32-year-old batsman. “There’s a flexibility about Pakistan which will suit my style.” Pressed on this point, Pietersen expressed an affinity with the driving habits of his new compatriots. “On the way from the airport to the PCB, I saw SUVs flatten cyclists, I saw sedans cut across three lanes to take a sharp left turn, I saw 17 children in a back seat, I saw a goat stuffed between a married couple on a motorbike. I saw my future here. It’s a place you can do what you want.” The talented strokemaker said he hoped to follow an esteemed tradition of middle-order batsmen from the country, listing Zaheer Abbas, Javed Miandad and VVS Laxman as heroes. “Also, I’m just being honest, but my doosra is better than Saeed Ajmal’s,” Pietersen said in a humble voice. The addition of such a star figure in the dressing room is bound to spice up an already hot-headed Pakistan team. Does Pietersen want the captaincy? “No, no, no. This is another reason I’ll be happier here. In England there was always insecurity from the leader because I was the only ex-captain in the team. In Pakistan there are usually...
